Industrial pilot projects for utilisation of neutron- and photon based techniques at large scale infrastructures - spring 2019

In this offer, we support three types of project initiatives that build expertise around industrial utilisation of large scale facilities equivalent to those under development at MAX IV and ESS in Lund. The proposals should be based on a need for at least one Swedish company and aim to verify whether neutron- or photon based technologies are appropriate to meet the company´s development needs. Note that the information in this offer still is preliminary.

The offer in brief

What can you apply for?

Pilot projects that build expertise around industrial utilisation of large scale facilities equivalent to those under development at MAX IV and ESS in Lund.

Who can apply?

The project consortium should consist of companies, research organisations or other legal persons. At least one project partner must be a Swedish registered company (or a company with an establishment or branch in Sweden). At least one project partner must be a different Swedish organisation contributing with relevant expertise in neutron- or photon experiments at large scale facilities

How much can you apply for?

SEK 100 000-500 000 depending on what kind of project (A-C). The total budget for the call for proposals is SEK 15 million.

  • Whats is the offer about?

Through the "Research infrastructure – utilisation and collaboration" programme, Vinnova wants to strengthen the Swedish innovation system by contributing to capacity building and increased understanding of how the use of advanced research infrastructures can respond to industrial and societal needs. With this particular call for proposals we want to support industrial innovation work and encourage Swedish companies to better see the possibilities of advanced neutron- and photon experiments within their respective areas of application.

A project proposal should be based on the needs of at least one Swedish company which is also a participant of the project. The project activities must be related to the verification of how neutron or photon-based techniques can be applied in order to meet a company’s problems or development needs. Planning and implementation of experiments, as well as interpreting the results, should be carried out in active collaboration with appropriate expertise.

The project consortium shall therefore also include at least one Swedish participant organization that assists with such expertise.

Note that the offer does not address applications where the techniques are already an established tool for the company. Project activities should aim at confirming added value that is not to consider as already verified for the company.

The call for proposals consists of three different share offers:

Below follows a very brief summary. See the announcement text for full information.

    A) Preparatory projects for survey and planning
The proposal should be based on a hypothesis regarding how photon or neutron-based technologies can meet the company's needs. Project activities can include identification of available technologies, methods and relevant experimental stations in specific research infrastructures, as well as method selection and planning of experiments.

Each project can apply for a maximum grant of SEK 100.000 The maximum project period length is 3 months.

    B) Pilot experiments at large scale research infrastructures for neutron and photon techniques
The call for proposals funds experiments at MAX IV as well as at international large-scale research infrastructures for neutron and photon-based techniques. All types of access for experimental/beam time are allowed and beam time is also an eligible cost.

Examples of approved project activities apart from the experiment itself include:

    • Methodology and design of experiments, including necessary
    • Method development or adaptation of the relevant experimental environments/setups
    • Sample production and sample preparation, directly connected to conducting the experiment
    • Cost of travel and subsistence in connection with the implementation of the experiment
    • Analysis, treatment and interpretation of measured results/data, including comparisons with existing results from more established analytical techniques or modelling
    • Planning for how the results can be developed after the project.

Each project can apply for a maximum grant of SEK 500.000. The maximum project period length is 18 months.

Please note, that the projects funded in the 2018 call for proposals only correspond to the present sub-call B. See summaries of the 30 projects that were granted at that time.

    C) Development projects for improved post-experimental analysis and industry-relevant data management

The project proposal should be based on already obtained data/results from a previously performed experiments using photon or neutron-based techniques, where the company has participated in defining the problem and execution. The project activities should include development work, for example establishing or adapting data processing methods to industrial application.

Each project can apply for a maximum grant of SEK 300.000 The maximum project period length is 8 months.
