In recent years, the US and China's geopolitical showdowns have driven increased worldwide regulation of the international exchange of advanced technology. The US's large government subsidies to favor its manufacturing industry heavily affect other industrially significant countries. These countries in turn increase their government investments to strengthen "economic security", domestic innovative capacity and industrial competitiveness.

The technological and industrial arms race presents Sweden's competitiveness with major challenges. As a small country, Sweden is heavily dependent on international cooperation in research and innovation (FoI). R&D cooperation with other countries requires internationally prominent R&D environments and technology-leading companies in key technology areas.

Countries that are important to Sweden are beginning to systematically analyze their technological capability in critical technology areas for industrial competitiveness, national security and climate change. Such analytical ability is also crucial for Sweden.

The government has given Vinnova the task of identifying and proposing strategically important technologies that can strengthen Sweden's competitiveness and business investments in research and development by 31 October 2024. This report illustrates the world situation and presents preliminary results of Sweden's research position in critical technology areas that are linked to the government mission.
