Important results from the project

The project aimed to gather crucial knowledge about controlling the fabrication process to ensure acceptable material integrity in components when welding new superalloys G27 and VDM 780. A combination of material characterization, heat treatment studies, welding trials, microstructural characterization, and weldability testing has been conducted in the project. Five research papers have been generated during the project.

Expected long term effects

Optimized welding parameters have been obtained, followed by detailed microstructural and heat treatment studies on welded G27 and VDM 780 using SEM-EDS, EBSD, and TEM. Extensive SEM-EDS and EBSD analyses were conducted in-house at the University West, while TEM examination was performed at the University of Manitoba, Canada. This characterization contributes to eventually adding these two materials to the material portfolio currently in use for the fabrication of turbine structures.

Approach and implementation

Welding trials based on statistical design of experiments using K-TIG and Laser Beam Welding have been performed on two different G27 and VDM 780 plate thicknesses coupled with detailed and extensive microstructural and heat treatment studies.
