Important results from the project
Energy efficient transports with low CO2 emissions are needed. The amount of timber transported on each vehicle combination needs to be increased to reduce the total amount of CO2 emissions. This can be achieved without higher road damage or decreased safety. In the project a new modular system with vehicles and trailers is developed. The aim is to decrease the CO2 emissions by 25% per tonne x km of transported wood. Cooperation between vehicle manufacturers, forest industries, research institutes and authorities is established.
Expected long term effects
Our goal is to significantly reduce greenhouse gas emissions from road transport. The target value for the 90-ton combination is 25%. For the 74-tonne combinations is 12 to 17%, depending on driving conditions, terrain and configuration. Previous projects has been 22% for the 90-ton combination, and 8-15% for 74-ton trucks. We have made a number of technical improvements in this project in order to have additionally reduced fuel consumption and get further reduced greenhouse gas emissions.
Approach and implementation
3 complete vehicle combinations (3 trucks, 2 dollies, 3 links 4 semitrailers) has been kept in operation and updated with new technical solutions. Focus is on traction and fuel consumption. This step of the project also served as base for a new traffic regulation 2017 allowing more efficient usage of existing infrastructure.
