Important results from the project

The purpose was to evaluate a new chemical process for the production of 100% bio-based vinyl acetate, a common component in i.e. adhesives. The process was successfully validated on a laboratory scale through three repeated trials, achieving consistent and stable operating conditions. Chemical analyses of output streams indicated formation of the desired product. The project has enabled continued work in process optimization and provided input for initial market and sustainability efforts.

Expected long term effects

The laboratory process has been demonstrated runnable and proof-of-concept has been achieved. Further development and optimization of the process will proceed without interruption after the final date of this Vinnova-funded project and an application for funding to add the second chemical reaction step has been submitted. RISE AB and RISE Processum will proceed running experiments and analyzing products, respectively, and Sekab will proceed evaluating the business case of producing VAM from bioethanol.

Approach and implementation

The project was essentially executed according to plan, although some activities were delayed due to summer vacations. All sharp trials (excluding runnability and pressure tests) were performed during an intense two-week period rather than over several months, as initially planned. Market and sustainability related tasks were performed mainly towards the end of the project. In total, 8 meetings were held throughout the project and the collaboration between the parties worked effectively.

The project description has been provided by the project members themselves and the text has not been looked at by our editors.
