Important results from the project
The purpose of the project Urban waste to food via fish feed is to develop commercial systems for sustainably produced animal feed where organic waste is converted into nutritious feed. The objective of the project´s initiation phase was to create a qualified project constellation for the development and construction of supporting testing pilot facilities, where microbes and insects processes urban organic waste into sustainable bio-protein.
Expected long term effects
The project´s initial phase has resulted in a defined and enterprising project constellation, represented by both industry and academy, as the next project phase will take the first steps in establishing the verifying test facilities for sustainably produced bio-protein. The project is expected to break the dependence with fishmeal and soybean meal in the large-scale production of fish.
Approach and implementation
The approach of the initial phase included a national gathering of competence as well as defining the final consortium, having potential to contribute to the project objective in converting urban waste to feed protein. Thanks to the network assembled during the project, new opportunities emerged, including new urban residual flows and process development. The project plan and its timeframe has thus proved to be well planned.
