Important results from the project
The project fulfilled its aims and objectives by developing an innovative process for recycling critical metals from e-waste. It demonstrated the feasibility of integrating three cutting-edge technologies into a continuous flow prototype system, showcasing cost-effective, resource-efficient, and energy-saving approaches for recycling. We proved that mild acids can efficiently dissolve metal particles in a system equipped with proper filtering equipment. Business model was developed to ensure market viability, aligning the technology with commercial opportunities.
Expected long term effects
The project showcased a novel heat exchange system that can effectively utilizes waste heat generated from ultrasound, albeit tested only with non-reactive fluid. It validated the viability of continuous metal extraction system using our innovative process. This technology promoted local CRM recovery, reducing EU import reliance and mitigating supply chain disruptions. Aligned with global sustainability objectives, it paved the way for sustainable CRM recycling in future advancements. The business model developed underscores the need of subsidies to ensure profitability.
Approach and implementation
The project successfully advanced from concept validation to prototype development. Key process design components included ultrasonic homogenizer, ball valve, cooling block, chiller, thermocouple, pH meter, filters, etc. Efficient reuse of heat generated by ultrasound was a significant design achievement. Team members actively participated in Vinnova workshop, laid groundwork for the second-stage development of the prototype to improve performance and align with market needs. A company is now structured to plan and fully incorporate the second-stage product development.
