Funding from Vinnova SEK 1 000 000
Project duration March 2008 - April 2011
Status Completed

Important results from the project

The aim is to increase the understanding of the complex relationships between on the one hand university education and research and on the other hand regional economic dynamics and growth. The objective is to increase the knowledge about the efficiency of universities in transforming funding to output, such as e g graduated students, and about the impact of these outputs on regional economic growth.

Expected long term effects

The project is expected to contribute significantly to the existing scientific literature concerning the regional importance of universities by 4-5 journal articles and by one licentiate, one PhD and some master thesis. By close interaction with our partners the project will offer a firm ground for assessing future regional development alternatives involving universities

Approach and implementation

The project will be organized in three sub-projects. One will deal with the short run impact of universities on regional employment and production and with their efficiency in transforming funds to different outputs. Another will focus on the impact of university education on the formation of new firms. The third one will study the role of universities as nodes in the regional innovation system. We will make use of the micro- database FAD linking individuals and firms classified by e g education and industry, respectively. We will also use officially available data for university input and output and undertake surveys concerning the network role of universities.
