Important results from the project

Sustainability is recognized as the driver for resource-productivity and improved competitiveness of the automotive industry. The abundant use of metalworking fluids in manufacturing processes and the associated costs and environmental impacts have been a major sustainability concern. Transitioning to sustainable production requires tailored sustainability assessment methods, as well as improved predictive models and simulation tools to aid industrial end-use validation and demonstration.

Expected long term effects

The patented cryo-MQL system from Accu-Svenska was further developed in the project and validated at TRL-6 level - at two test facilities (at Chalmers & Sandvik Coromant). The demonstration activities focused on industrial use cases, involving machining of cast iron and CGI (AB Volvo); and hardened tool steel (Uddeholms). The benefits of improved quality and productivity were clarified for the end users - which supports further technology development at higher TRLs.

Approach and implementation

To strengthen competitiveness in the automotive industry and to contribute to more sustainable production, the project demonstrated the feasibility of cryogenic cooling combined with minimal use of cutting fluids in machining. The project´s approach to technology assessment included sustainability assessment, simulation / modelling and machining trials. Furthermore, the challenges associated with technology integration were systematically analysed. The project was carried out by Chalmers, KTH, RISE, Volvo Group, Scania, Sandvik Coromant and Accu-Svenska.
