Purpose and goal
Melker aims to explore the potential of increasing kayak production volume using 3D printed smart and flexible form with heating function. In previous project, Melker has used 3D printing for rapid kayak prototypes. Together with RISE AB and circular 3D printing material supplier Biofiber tech AB, we completed the rapid prototyping as phase one for digital manufacturing. The purpose of this project is to develop phase 2 as a quick tool to take a step forward towards a digitized circular business model transition.
Expected effects and result
The result of the project verifies the added value of 3D printing as a potential to increase the productivity for bio-based fiber laminated kayak in resin infusion lamination. And verified potential to reduce energy consumption, total cost with less waste material during Melker´s kayak (material) life cycle. The project improves the value added of circular plastics to promote recycling and circular economy. It is one of the goals to achieve the UN´s SDG objective 12.5. The project is also expected to have an impact on the UN´s objective SDG 12.8.
Planned approach and implementation
This project idea was initiated by Melker of Sweden AB to increase kayak productivity via 3D printed rapid tooling, with the aim of recycling the production materials in a close loop. RISE AB will test the kayak casting tools. As well as coordinating with 3D printing material supplier Biofiber Tech AB for material development.
