Important results from the project
Purpose of the project has been to provide documentation that enables implementation of two functions: A) Warning for thunderstorms. Alarm on alert for thunder. Provides increased opportunities for concerned to make the right decisions to minimize preventive stops and/or switch to "island operation" during thunder. B) Identification of objects with low immunity. Complements control systems with identification of objects with least resistance to voltage changes. The project assesses that the project report clearly describes the requirements for these functions.
Expected long term effects
The project´s results are documented in form of a requirements specification and a functional description. Parts of the proposed measures are implemented in the reference facility, and it is expected that thunder-related disturbances will relatively decrease. In the long run, expectation is that a general thunder warning system will be developed and more industries make their objects less sensitive to voltage changes as described in the report. There are good opportunities to build a self-learning system that gradually increases the accuracy of a warning system.
Approach and implementation
Initially, the necessary requirement for a thunder warning system were formulated. The requirements were worked out in consultation with the operation at the reference facility. The requirements has since been discussed during meetings with SMHI as supplier of weather data, process industry as possible users and ABB as an integrator of thunder warning in the control system. Finally, the documentation was sent to all participants and their point of views were included in the report (requirement specification and function description for thunder warning and object identification)
