Title

The Mine of the Future

The conceptual study Mine of the Future brings together major Swedish mining companies and several major global suppliers and the academia to develop a common vision for future mining. The vision will be used to identify the most strategic issues that need to be addressed and solved in present mining operations to stay world class in production and in level with world class manufacturers in other sectors, and also to convey an image of the sector as innovative, interesting and sustainable.

Expected long term effects

It is envisioned that the study will be used to prepare the framework for a Swedish national mining Strategic Research, Development and Innovation Agenda 2011 2020. The Mine of the Future study is classified as an innovative project; all parties in the consortium will certainly make use of the deliverables for planning their individual R&D programmes and rethink the mining business. The project will also be used for promoting the sector nationally and internationally, not least to attract students and to stimulate decision-makers to learn more of this sector.

Approach and implementation

The study will treat man-technology-organisation to find potential solutions for cost efficiency, less hazardous working conditions and decreased environmental footprint. The focus of the study is the opportunities and limitations of underground environment for mining and mineral processing, albeit other areas of the value-chain are incorporated as well. Workshops will be arranged for discussing ideas and for fine-tuning the progress of the work packages based on the achieved results.
