Important results from the project

An interdisciplinary team worked on challenges that arise for people with cognitive impairments when using public transport stations. The focus was on visual search and wayfinding. The project group produced 7 different concept ideas that showed the goal conflict between the desire to dampen and enhance impressions. The concept documents have different TRL levels: We have chosen to describe the two concepts that have the highest TRL level and make a plan for the next steps.

Expected long term effects

The long-term goal is social inclusion at public transport stations. If it is easy to find and pleasant to get through and be at stations, we believe that more people will choose public transport. We want to spread knowledge and empathy about how different people can experience one and the same physical reality. We want to pave the way for new innovative designs of stations that can reduce visual stress without sacrificing clarity so that more groups can thrive and function at exchange points.

Approach and implementation

3 project parts: 1) Literature study, 2) Design analysis of stations in Borås, interviews with disability consultants, 3) Concept development. The design analysis was done in several steps, including: Visit of the stations and observations. Interviews were conducted to understand how a public transport journey is experienced. The results were used to create fictitious customer journeys with obstacles. Concept ideas were developed in a creative process and strong ideas were taken forward.
