Important results from the project

The project aim and objective was to develop concepts for how IoT in the waste and resource chain can be used as a strategic resource to enable data-driven working methods and published as open data with the aim of promoting citizen dialogue, involvement and democratization. The project has developed, tested and implemented two concepts in three different case studies. This work has provided lessons regarding the use of sensors in various applications, the environmental impact of various parts of the studied systems and more accessible information for citizens.

Expected long term effects

Two concepts was developed; 1) Develop data-driven work methods with the goal of higher resource and cost efficiency in the municipality´s work with resource management, 2) Open data services for civic engagement and inclusion in environmental issues. The developed concepts were tested and implemented in three case studies; connected wastebins, connected textile containers and realt time visitor statistics at the recycling centres. Citizens can now see capacity and visitor pressure in the recycling chain in real time.

Approach and implementation

Connected waste bins and textile collection containers involved tests with sensors in containers to measure the degree of filling. Tests showed e.g. which sensors handled the vessels best, and that the IoT part of the systems as a whole had a low impact on the total environmental impact. At the recycling centers, it was tested to use data on entry and exit as a basis for resource planning and information to visitors about visitor pressure in real time, and this was made available on the web and app.
