Important results from the project
The project has met its objective by exploring the effect of using an external interface for automated vehicles to support the interaction between humans (pedestrians and manually driven vehicles) and automated vehicles in field experiments on AstaZero test track. The project met its goal by validating previous results in a more dynamic and realistic condition. The results of the tests show an increase of perceived safety in conjunction with automated vehicles in mixed traffic environments and thereby fulfilled the goal of the project.
Expected long term effects
The results of experiments show that the use of external signaling via the AVIP prototype makes it easier to understand the traffic situation and leads to increased perceived safety in the interaction with automated vehicles for the two tested usergroups- pedestrians and drivers to manual automotive- to varying degrees. By including the drivers of manually driven vehicle the tested AVIP prototype´s application area has been expanded. The project has also identified open research issues for further research of the involved parties.
Approach and implementation
The project has carried out an experiment at AstaZero test track where an external interface (AVIP) who can convey an automated vehicle intent to its surrounding road users. The experiment included two groups of road users (pedestrians / drivers) and utilized the AstaZero: city area part. Workshops with industry stakeholders have been conducted during the project with respect to the experimental setup, results and future research.
