Important results from the project

The use of software systems in the aviation industry will continue to grow. The quality and safety of avionic software systems are not solely a product of addressing technical and process related aspects. The cognitive, behavioral, and social factors are of at least equal importance in creating an organization that is able to effectively uphold the quality standards. By using an interdisciplinary approach, the project has explored how these mechanisms govern and control software development.

Expected long term effects

Through conducting several scientific studies related to the behavioral aspects of software development, this project has significantly contributed to increasing the awareness of the behavioral concerns and provided concrete tools the software companies can use. A deeper understanding of such concerns will clearly increase the efficiency and provide the Swedish aviation companies with a competitive edge.

Approach and implementation

The project was divided into three main work packages with the common denominator of exploring the behavioral aspects of software development. To gain an understanding we used a mixed model design in our studies, combining focus groups, semi-structured interviews, questionnaires and literature reviews. The qualitative data were collected to gain a broader understanding while the quantitative data were used to verify the suggested models.

The project description has been provided by the project members themselves and the text has not been looked at by our editors.
