Important results from the project
SoS is a part of the larger research environment at Lund University and is the shortest path to industry. The cross-fertilization of industry and academia is the key mission, together with maintenance of critical mass. SoS must manage the conflict between scientific innovation and commercial relevance. SoS has been successful with a number of inventions that have produced scientific publications, patents, and IC prototypes close to commercialization. We strongly believe that a fundamental ingredient is the liberal exchange of ideas and the mutual trust between its partners.
Expected long term effects
SoS´s main focus has been on cellular communications but has been broadened to wireless communications in a wider perspective, such has mobile health and industry applications. SoS has been instrumental in formulating three successful EU projects: MultiBase, DRAGON and MAMMOET. We believe that this shows the strength and cooperation. Knowledge transfer is through patents and transfer of personnel but it is also worth mentioning the Lund Circuit Design Workshops that has been transformed from a local event to a true meeting place with around 150 participants during the last years.
Approach and implementation
The strategic direction and key decisions are decided by a board which consists of one representative for each partner, both academic and industrial. The board decides on SoS budget and the overall research direction as well as at the project level. The direction of the research projects is decided by the board while the day to day activities are managed from within the projects. The International Advisory Board evaluates center activities and reports to the board. The organization of the center has proven to be successful throughout the years and led to mutual trust between the partners.
