Purpose and goal
Genome of Europe (GoE) is a new effort within the 1+Million Genomes initiative where a pan-European reference genome database is being built. As Sweden’s contribution to GoE, well-phenotyped biobank samples will be analyzed with the latest DNA technologies, thereby constructing a world-class genomics resource. The project aims to increase Sweden´s competitiveness in research and innovation, facilitate the utilization and access to genomic data, and ultimately contribute to improved healthcare.
Expected effects and result
The project will contribute whole-genome data for at least 2,600 Swedish individuals to GoE by 2028, of which at least 1,000 samples from the SCAPIS biobank (www.scapis.org). The SCAPIS data, which with will be generated with new DNA technology, will contribute to a world-unique resource for research and innovation in genomics. The data will also be made available to health care, thereby providing immediate benefit to patients with rare diseases but also in other areas such as pharmacogenetics.
Planned approach and implementation
Within the project, existing whole-genome data will be collected, and in addition, a competitive data set will be created using long-read sequencing technology. Sequencing will be performed on biobank samples from the SCAPIS study (www.scapis.org). Data will be made available for research and healthcare through new genomics data infrastructure. A central part of the project is to coordinate with other national initiatives and thereby help build a national structure for health and research data.
