Important results from the project
The goal of the Sweden Flex feasibility study was to develop a proposal for a new strategic innovation program with a focus on Flexibility in the electricity system. The preliminary study engaged about 70 actors and joined two other initiatives, SEOS and Energiklivet, where we gathered together and submitted a joint proposal for a new strategic innovation program with a focus on flexibility in the energy system to accelerate the green transition.
Expected long term effects
The outcome of the preliminary study is an application for a program office for a strategic innovation program focused on flexibility in the energy system. It brings together a wide range of actors passionate about taking on the mission to ensure an inclusive transition to a sustainable, resilient, and flexible power system by 2035, supporting a national increase of available electricity by 40% compared to 2023. The long-term effect of this is a more secure world where everyone has access to the electricity they need, when they need it, for what they need it, and where they need it.
Approach and implementation
Backcasting was used to identify actions for achieving a future energy system by 2035. The method compares future visions with the present and identifies a ´gap´. Strategies are developed by analyzing barriers and drivers, focusing on innovation within policy and international collaboration. Sweden can lead globally with tailored solutions. Questions for various system stages - electricity transmission, energy communities, citizens, and society - explore needs and influencing factors for resilience and cross-sectoral work.
