Call Impact Innovation: Feasibility studies within Technological Action Areas in the program Metals & Minerals

Purpose and goal

This feasibility study aims to create a plan for a recycling system for shielding gases in welding and additive manufacturing. Key objectives include proposing the system, analyzing its economic and environmental benefits, assessing risks and opportunities, planning its integration with minimal disruption, and designing a pilot project to test it. These efforts will lay the groundwork for future full-scale implementation, enhancing efficiency and sustainability in the industry.

Expected effects and result

By the end of the feasibility study, the key deliverables will include a technical report analyzing the feasibility of recycling shielding gases, an economic and environmental impact analysis focusing on cost savings and CO₂ reduction, a full-scale implementation plan with technical specifications, timelines, and risk management strategies, and the formation of a consortium with industry stakeholders. These deliverables will provide a foundation for future research and development decisions.

Planned approach and implementation

The project aims to improve shielding gas management by analyzing inefficiencies and quantifying gas losses. At the same time, recovery technologies are evaluated for their technical and economic feasibility. Based on the findings, a framework is developed to integrate cost-effective and practical recycling systems into existing manufacturing processes.
