Important results from the project
Within the scope of this project potential alternative techniques and materials were evaluated for technical performance, economic viability, toxicological risk assessment and sustainability.
Expected long term effects
There are several viable alternative processes, however none of them will be able to replace Cr or Ni in all applications. White bronze is a potential alternative to Ni plating, however innovation in terms of replacing cyanide as an additive to the bath composition is required. Vacuum deposition techniques, e.g. chemical vapor deposition (CVD) and physical vapor deposition (PVD) are the safest alternatives in terms of health and environment. However, they have limitations on the substrate geometry and material or the cost of each coated item.
Approach and implementation
During the project, two workshops have been arranged where the needs and interests of the participating organizations were discussed. Based on the information and need shared by the project partners during the first workshop, a literature study has been conducted during the fall of 2018. The found techniques from the literature study were presented at the second workshop, where after they were evaluated and prioritized after needs and interests of the project partners.
