Important results from the project

The purpose of Drive Sweden Policy Lab case 4 "Future traffic regulations" is to understand the need for development of the regulatory framework for traffic regulations together with a wide range of actors. We have gathered information about (1) needs and benefits of digital and machine-readable information about traffic rules, (2) prerequisites and challenges before a change, (3) ongoing work in Sweden and at the EU level, as well as how it works in other countries. As a results of the policy lab, we have resumed that the regulatory framework around traffic regulations needs to change.

Expected long term effects

Within the framework of the project, we have discussed possible solutions and consequences of different solution options. We have not been able to quantify the societal benefits of the available data on traffic regulations within the framework of this project, but we have described the benefits and estimate that they are potentially very large. Some effects are also difficult to calculate in costs, but are nevertheless of great importance. However, the many needs and benefits of traffic regulation data that we have identified suggest that the benefits outweigh the costs to society.

Approach and implementation

The purpose of the project has been to investigate a future system of traffic regulations through a policy lab to handle regulations and decision-making processes. This has been done together with a broad range of actors affected by future traffic regulations. A prerequisite for being able to solve the issue was to gather these actors and together try to arrive at a well-balanced solution. Thus, we have used policy lab as a method to find a way forward and to support the development towards a connected and automated road transport system.
