Important results from the project
Film-forming products such as paint or protective coatings contain components with different functions. Some compounds make the film durable, water resistant, and/or dirt repellent. Other components ensure a flat surface is formed when the formulation dries on its substrate. One of our product types has been studied to see how the product dries after the application and hanges in the structure of the dried film over time. Also effects of concentration and substitution of components was investigated.
Expected long term effects
By using SuperADAM reflectometer at Institute Laue Langevin (ILL), Grenoble, we have gained increased understanding of how different components affect which film will form when dry. We can use our results to improve the properties of coatings such as wear resistance, cleanability, spreadability and dirt repellent properties.
Approach and implementation
The project is conducted in collaboration between RISE Research Institutes of Sweden and Gipeco AB. We have used neutron and X-ray reflectometry as appropriate methods to study the structural properties of thin films.
