Important results from the project
To attract qualified personnel, Swedish Mining Innovation organized a tour for university students with the theme "sustainable mining and metal value chains" with visits to LKAB, Boliden and SSAB in Norrbotten and Västerbotten. 17 students from 5 universities and Bergsskolan participated. Industrial site visits were organized from LKAB Kiruna, Boliden Aitik, SSAB, Hybrit and Epiroc in Luleå and Boliden Rönnskär in Skellefteå. The feedback from the students was extremely positive. Many had not been in operating mines or even to northern Sweden before.
Expected long term effects
Several students expressed interest in the companies and the region, including contacts such as Masters thesis work or employment. The follow-up survey showed that all of students that responded felt that the tour had met or exceeded their expectations.
Approach and implementation
The tour had to be postponed several times due to the pandemic. This led to some students being unavailable, so we had 17 instead of the planned 30 students. Logistically, 17 was more practical. This was the first tour conducted by Swedish Mining Innovation, and this experience will be used to shape similar initiatives.
