Important results from the project

The objective included the preparatory and start-up work for an international standardization work regarding energy measurement and energy evaluation of boats. We have also had around fifteen international experts actively participate and contribute to the development of the standard proposal. The standard proposal is currently in the development phase and the next step is to send the proposal for comments to all ISO countries for a new round of comments.

Expected long term effects

New innovative and energy-efficient technologies for boat propulsion can be compared from an energy efficiency point of view with existing technologies. Advantages of these technologies can be demonstrated according to an international standard, which strengthens the opportunities of new technologies on the market. With ISO 25128 different technologies can be compared from a sustainability perspective, such as climate impact, pollution, resource efficiency and other alternatives on the market.

Approach and implementation

During the reporting period, the project has continued to be implemented according to the ISO process for international standards, i.e., the standard proposal was sent to all countries in ISO/TC 188 Small Craft. During the voting period, the country experts reviewed the proposal and submitted comments and voted on whether the proposal should be approved as standardization work within ISO. During 2024, the newly started international working group has held meetings to prepare the standard.
