Important results from the project
Cities are looking to find new models to provide alternatives to how food can be produced in urban settings. The Stadsbruk method helps cities work together to find these solutions through farming and entrepreneurship. Through a consortium of five partners across Europe, Stadsbruk has developed digital tools to support the development of urban farming in cities. With the aim to develop a method adaptable to a European market to strengthen and promote Swedish export of innovative solutions for a more sustainable food system.
Expected long term effects
The project has resulted in the development of a digital incubator program tailored for urban farmers. The conceptualization of three educations aimed for public actors that want to begin the process of establishing urban farming in their cities. The method has contributed to 145 urban farmers starting their own business in 6 regions in Europe. New collaborations have been formed to increase local food production, as well as new approaches for municipalities and regions to map green spaces and earmark these for urban farming in and around cities.
Approach and implementation
Overall, the project goals have been met successfully. The digitalization of the incubator program and the adaptation of the method to European cities has opened up new opportunities for further development. A larger target group has been able to take advantage of the method and 28 cities have gained knowledge about the method. However, the digital nature of the service has proven to be successful at the same time as being a challenge. Implementors need to be able to navigate digital platforms and develop physical spaces for urban farming.
