Important results from the project
The project developed a framework contributing to common understanding for the linkages between physical environment and social sustainability in tthe planning process. The framework provides a systematic approach, based on research and practically applicable. The basic foundation of the framework is that the physical environment should create the conditions for a healthy, functional and stimulating life for everyone, with an overarching goal that physical planning should promote an equal distribution of resources.
Expected long term effects
The framework consists of two parts: a research-based categorization and visualization of social values in the physical environment, as well as a step-by-step process for practically use. This is expected to contribute to a common language in the short term. An expected long-term effect is that various actors in the planning process use the project´s approach to social sustainability in physical planning. With the project´s continuous focus on participation of practitioners, as well as a user-friendly and easily accessible guidance, there are good hopes that this effect will occur.
Approach and implementation
The project was divided into four work packages: 1. Common framework, 2. Social investment, 3. Social balancing, and 4. Communication and dissemination. The project adopted an iterative innovation process that involved literature studies, development of prototypes of the framework, tests through case studies and dialogues with practitioners. The project arranged two conferences and a webinar, all with a high number of participants. The project was carried out in collaboration between Tyréns, Lunds municipality and Skanska.
