Important results from the project

The project´s aim was to create, demonstrate and set basic requirements for smart traffic zones. This has been done in 3 different demonstrations in Stockholm and Gothenburg. The project has showed that it is possible to create smart traffic zones by integrating vehicles, smart sensors, and geofencing information to automatically limit speed of vehicles as well as create warning systems for drivers and cyclists. The project has also studied regulatory challenges linked to the design and function of the various zones, investigated business models and analyzed system effects.

Expected long term effects

The demonstrations have showed potential in terms of increased traffic safety and transport efficiency. In the tests with vehicle speed control, there was a generally lower average speed and the drivers thought it was good that the vehicle controls the speed automatically so that they can focus on surrounding traffic. A low speed, despite heavy weight, also had a positive effect on reduced vibrations in the ground and buildings. In the demo safe construction exit, cyclists had a lower speed with the warning system activated and both drivers and cyclists expressed that they felt safer.

Approach and implementation

The project was divided into 8 work packages, three of which concerned the demonstrations of smart zones and three which supported and analyzed the demos with digital infrastructure and analysis (regulatory challenges, system effects and business models). The work has been characterized by a good collaboration climate between participating parties and the participants expressed that they have been able to learn from each other. The collaboration project has made it possible to work together on a more open term, more agile and with more dialogue and exchange between parties.
