Purpose and goal

The aim of the project was to make the city´s open data available with existing IoT technology. With a smart sign as a physical link between the city´s data and the citizens, we wanted to investigate how open data can support a more inclusive Stockholm and go into depth what a smart city can or should be. We have examined what information which the Stockholmers would like to see on a smart, dynamic sign. During the project we have developed the basis for a demonstrator and, through low-fi user studies and workshops, identified and identified the need and design for a larger pilot study.

Expected effects and result

Our objective was to evaluate if making the city´s collected data available, both in the physical as well as the digital environment, could contribute to a smarter city that motivates the residents to be part. The city already provides some open data, but it is inaccessible to greater mass. Through our project, we have gained a great understanding of the importance of creating and providing space for dialogue around what big data and open data are to give residents the opportunity to explore, understand and influence the city they live in.

Planned approach and implementation

This project has been design-driven with users at the centre. It has been divided into four work packages; project management, concept development, prototype development and evaluation. Through the workshops, lo-fi tests, interviews and surveys we conducted during the project, we have been able to identify and determine the need for further development. This material has also served as a basis for the city for decision-making for a possible next step in carrying out a larger study.
