Important results from the project
The objective of the project was to establish a new technology of sensors that are integrated into metal castings during the casting process. The challenges to overcome included selection of materials to integrate that could withstand the casting temperature, and that could also provide a fiunctioning sensor signal from inside the cast metal, as well as invent an appropriate sensor signal and signal detection methodology. The project has achieved all of its objectives, and has thereby opened for a new technological research and innovation domain.
Expected long term effects
The project has opened for a new technological research and innovation domain, and there are now different options for future development projects. The innovations will make it possible for casting industry to charge and enhance their products with many types of functionality and services. This will enable a resource independent economical development, and may instead provide increased resource efficiency. It is particularly expected that sensor equipped metals and other materials will be key technology for circular economy. The consortium plans for further innovation support.
Approach and implementation
The project was organized into parallell WP:s, but was managed as an agile innovation and knowledge build-up process. All partners had clearly separate roles during prototype and knowledge development loops. This was effective and strongly contributed to the strong result. The Work packages were: WP1 Project management - Project manager, team and a Steering committee represented by each partner WP2 Application development - Industry WP3 Metallurgy development - RISE WP4 Sensor technology development - RISE WP5 Prototype evaluation - Industry WP6 Dissemination and upscale - RISE
