Important results from the project

Infrastructure is a multi-disciplinary domain where access to correct and complete data is a pre-requisite for achieving an efficient asset management process. The project aimed to investigate whether linked data and semantic web technologies and standards can be used to transfer data from varying sources to asset management applications at infrastructure owners, thereby contributing to efficient and automated data flows of data of high quality.

Expected long term effects

State-of-the-art dataflows are characterized by manual and, in a many instances, tedious and costly processes where data is kept in proprietary data islands for asset management. This leads to a lack of data quality and that existing data assets are not utilized. The project has shown that linked data and semantic web technologies and standards can constitute an essential component to achieve automated data flows where various data sources and asset management data islands can be made interoperable thereby providing business value.

Approach and implementation

The project has been implemented in four work packages, as follows: - Work package 1 (Planning and specification of solution and data flows) - Work package 2 (Develop a Proof-of-concept solution) - Work package 3 (Develop an in-depth solution) - Work package 4 (Presentation and reporting) Together with the Swedish Transport Administration and the Norwegian Public Roads Administration, the technical solution and relevant test cases and test data have been produced, which have been used to verify the technical solution. This approach has been a very good way to work!
