Purpose and goal

The purpose of the project is to investigate the possibility of developing a precise localization system for localization in underground mines by evaluating different sensor technologies for integration in AI-based systems. The goal is to collect and analyze data from various sensors in a mining environment to assess their suitability for localization. The results will be used as a basis for designing a full-scale project that enables automation in mining, improving both productivity and safety.

Expected effects and result

Expected results from the project include a comprehensive dataset of sensor readings from underground environments and a report analyzing this data in relation to the possibility of precise localization. Effects include improved opportunities for automation and remote control of mining machinery, enhancing safety and productivity in mining operations. The project is also expected to contribute to innovation in AI, strengthen Swedish mining industry´s competitiveness and sustainable development.

Planned approach and implementation

The project is carried out in three stages: First, a portable sensor mounting solution is developed to collect data on site in a mining environment. The sensor node is mounted on a service vehicle and is to be used to collect both manually positioned and continuous data from a mine for analysis. Finally, data quality and sensor performance are analyzed to assess their suitability for localization, which is reported and used for planning a full-scale project.
