Important results from the project
The aim of the SEBRA project has been to develop an e-bike equipped with radar and to evaluate it with regards to the interaction between the bicyclist and the bike, as well as between the bicycle and surrounding traffic. The aim has been to increase the cyclist´s situational awareness in traffic and evaluate the feasibility and benefits of transferring active safety features from motor vehicles to bicycles.
Expected long term effects
The results from the project show that the active safety features using radar can be effectively transferred from motor vehicles to e-bikes. The system has potential safety benefits, but the evaluations show that there are large individual variations in user experience and perceived benefit that invites for future research on personalised HMI.
Approach and implementation
The project has used an iterative development process with five different work packages: Scenario and market study, development of radar systems, HMI, evaluation, and project management. The first part of the project had the main focus on the technical development of the radar system and its functions to gradually shift to focus on HMI and evaluation.
