Important results from the project

The feedback from property owners, interest organizations and reports from such as SIRen, Boverket etc has verified that there is an interest for densification-concepts and sustainable methods for energy efficiency within the Miljonprogram. A pre-study of a prefabricable, type-house of wood has been designed. To reach the goal, to develope an industrial prototype, the concept need to be further developed and analyzed technically and economically. Politicians, planners and inhabitants view on densification of the Miljonprogram must also be examined and is planed to the next step.

Expected long term effects

As a study example we have choosen Malmö where there are 20 residential areas built during the Miljonprogram. If our concept would be implemented in only two blocks, 130 new small living units could be created, half of them contributing to energy efficiency of existing buildings. This corresponds to 10% of the annual housingproduction in Malmö during the last years. If 1/3 of the 240 municipalities declaring a housing shortage would build two blocks according to our concept more than 10 000 apartments could be created in Sweden.

Approach and implementation

An illustrated design concept has been developed as well as a summary of relevant reports on the subject. Technical solutions and the view on densification of the Miljonprogram is postponed to the next step in priority to examination of variations of the concept and verifying the approval from property owners. The national building regulations has been analyzed. Possible implementation areas and local plans have been examined. Other questions: small housing projects - cost benefit analysis, time and cost for changes in local plans - question for politicians rather than planners?!
