Important results from the project
Double Separation Technology (DST) enables circular use of industrial lubricants by removing contaminants (particles, varnish, water,...), which act as catalysts for oil degradation, effectively reducing the life of the oil and decreasing its performance. The results from this project have supported the development and scaling of products, processes and services that have saved thus far 6700 tons of CO2 in industrial applications, in over 400 installations worldwide.
Expected long term effects
The DST technology allow industries to not only reduce their overall oil consumption while improving lubricant performance, but can also enable the transition to more sustainable lubricants, that today have a significantly higher price per liter, as the life extension will improve the overall total cost of ownership (TCO).It also enables new business models based on performance-based contracts versus traditional oil volume sales.
Approach and implementation
A diverse team with different competences (from innovation to commercial expertise) formed by the two project partners, SKF RecondOil and Luleå University of Technology, worked together with an extended network of customers to accelerate validation and industrial implementation of the new developments. The objectives were achieved according to the time plan for the majority of the work streams, except process development activities which were affected by prototyping delays.
