Important results from the project

The aim of this pre-study is to explore the potential of online crowdsourcing methodologies for evaluation of external AV interfaces (eHMI) in an early design stage in order to drive better informed design decisions with a greater potential to be applicable on a wider scale. We explored the extent to which the online crowdsourcing platform MTurk is appropriate for conducting studies on external vehicle interfaces, and how well it replicates the corresponding evaluations in a lab study.

Expected long term effects

The project has expanded our knowledge on external interfaces for automated vehicles and created an understanding of how to design and validate crowdsourcing studies. It has also strengthened the collaboration between the project partners and the academy, as well as collaborations on the international arena. Together, this is expected to stimulate new research projects and make Sweden more competitive.

Approach and implementation

The project was divided into five work packages. These included a state-of-the-art literature review, design of new interface concepts and design and implementation of questionnaire studies that were conducted via the online crowdsourcing platform MTurk and in a laboratory. In these studies, both qualitative and quantitative data were generated which were then analysed using appropriate methods. Much of the work was carried out in the form of creative work meetings.

The project description has been provided by the project members themselves and the text has not been looked at by our editors.
