Important results from the project
The project aims to develop a system that supports active aging by assisting elderly to participate in the self-service society with independence and dignity intact. The integrated system developed was successfully tested in Barcelona and Ljubljana. The user tests were conducted in the home of some 20 elderly users with little or no previous experience of ICT or computers.
Expected long term effects
A fully integrated prototype has been developed and tested on user groups in Ljubljana and Barcelona with positive results. The knowledge, the design and technology developed by the project will be reused in future projects. The market research carried out during the project and the discussions held with industry stakeholders points to a market for Saapho. Discussions on commercialization is ongoing within the consortium.
Approach and implementation
Saapho was developed in an iterative flow where each prototype underwent several cycles of design, development, test and evaluation. The elderly who participated as testsubjects during development were crucial to the success of the project as they provided practical and concrete input in an area where guidelines and standards often do not keep up with the rapid developments of technology and society.
