Call Circular and biobased economy - From theory to practice

Important results from the project

The project Roundtables for Circular Economy has aimed to contribute to increased knowledge about challenges and opportunities related to circular economy and specifically product related legislation, with the overall aims to 1) contribute with guidance, for a more circular and resource efficient society, and 2) create a platform for discussions on circular economy, where authorities and industry could gain a common understanding of challenges and opportunities related to circular economy.

Expected long term effects

The study shows that the dialogue taken place with and between authorities and industry was very appreciated and opened for a constructive dialogue. It also showed great challenges related to adapting current product related legislation to circular product flows. It is clear that product related legislation is a) difficult to interpret, as it involves many directives and laws that are not synchronized, b) ambiguous as to what may or may not be done and still fulfil legislation, and c) is not adapted to the different strategies a circular economy entails and that companies wish to act upon.

Approach and implementation

The project was based on the delivery of two round tables with relevant authorities and industry representatives, with focus on two product categories: furniture and white goods. Complementary interviews and a literature study were also conducted, in order to collect additional information and for continued dialogue. The project resulted in a report and stand-alone appendixes aimed as guidelines concerning what directives that are relevant in relation to specific product categories and different recirculation strategies.
