Purpose and goal

The purpose of this project is to explore the potential for reusing treated wastewater in the Stockholm region to support circular water management. The goal is to identify suitable applications for technical water, legal obstacles, and to foster networks and collaborations among relevant stakeholders, such as municipalities and industries. Through case studies at three major treatment plants, the project aims to pave the way for sustainable, economically beneficial water reuse in the region.

Expected effects and result

Expected outcomes include concrete plans for reusing treated wastewater in the Stockholm region, identification of legal and technical obstacles, and development of networks for long-term collaboration. The effects include improved resource efficiency and reduced water scarcity through circular solutions. The project aims to create benchmarks and inspire other municipalities to integrate sustainable water reuse practices.

Planned approach and implementation

The project will be implemented in four work packages: mapping of usage areas, technical feasibility, legal and economic challenges, and development of a plan for practical implementation. Case studies at three treatment plants will identify challenges and solutions for water reuse. The project involves workshops, interviews, and collaboration among municipal water authorities, regulatory agencies, and industries to establish a sustainable water management model.
