Purpose and goal
This project aims to make future 6G satellite communications independent of access to GNSS services. First, it develops methods that make it possible to obtain location information using a 6G LEO satellite constellation, instead of using GNSS services. Second, it develops new ways to enable access to a 6G satellite network without requirements on access to accurate location information. Together, these solution dimensions will provide robust, resilient future 6G satellite networks.
Expected effects and result
The project will develop a deep understanding of the challenges, opportunities and limitations of LEO positioning. It will generate new positioning algorithms and new access techniques that are robust against a reduced accuracy of the user position. The project´s results will create robust access to 6G satellite networks, improved security and reliability of the 6G network; improved security for users in rural and remote areas, as well as energy efficient 6G IoT-devices.
Planned approach and implementation
The project is a collaboration between Luleå University of Technology (LTU) and Ericsson AB. With LTU as the coordinator, and a team of experts in various fields, for 2.5 years the project will work within work packages that revolve around ´Scenarios and requirements´, ´Autonomous network operation´, and ´Positioning algorithms´. We disseminate the results through scientific and academic channels, but also through industrial ones, notably through 3GPP´s relevant standardization groups.
