Purpose and goal

The project´s objective - to verify technical requirements and financial conditions for safe remote-controlled timber loaders via 5G has been achieved through the remote-controlled wheel loader that was demonstrated. The long-term goal, to strengthen the forest and automotive industry, has also have been achieved. The business model shows great opportunities to reduce costs and the project´s results also have the potential to reduce the environmental impact of transport through fewer transports.

Expected effects and result

The main delivery is a demonstrator, a remote-controlled timber loader equipped with connected cameras and sensors, which was presented with successful results at a press event at SCA´s timber terminal in Torsboda, Timrå. In addition to this, the project has carried out a needs analysis that addresses aspects such as regulations, the user perspective, physical security, cyber security and communication. An analysis of 5G has been published by Mittuniversitetet in collaboration with Telia. A business case shows that there is potential to reduce costs with a remote control solution.

Planned approach and implementation

The project has worked in five work packages, where demonstrator development and design of wheel loaders have been developed in parallel with analysis of communication and infrastructure. The demonstrator was shown at a press meeting in 2021 at Torsboda timber terminal, which resulted in about 20 publications in the media. Except for a short interruption due to the pandemic, the project parties have worked very intensively throughout the project period and the implementation has worked very well thanks to the fact that all actors contributed with their expertise and commitment.
