Regional effort for Industrial Symbiosis in Paper Province

Reference number
Coordinator The Paper Province
Funding from Vinnova SEK 1 000 000
Project duration October 2017 - September 2018
Status Completed
Venture Circular economy

Important results from the project

The aim was to gather regional actors for industrial symbiosis in Paper Province through a number of activities. Mapping of residual and lateral streams, then investigating and testing different possibilities. Looking at obstacles and solutions for industrial symbiosis. The mapping has been documented in a database of streams to be explored further as well as a model how to gather new data from companies. Interviews to gather information about symbiosis collaborations and actors´ intended roles in an industrial symbiosis network.

Expected long term effects

Results from the mapping of residual streams have been documented in a database of different potential streams to be explored further as well as a model how we will collect new data from other companies. Initial stakeholder meetings along the value chain have been implemented and new projects have been initiated. An expected effect of this is that any of the residual currents will be commercialized. Interview results with actors´ intended roles in a regional industrial symbiosis network will be used in the ongoing work.

Approach and implementation

Overall mapping of biological flows was made by collecting data from various open databases on the internet. Visualization of value chain, gross production up to finished product, was made. Detailed mapping of residual streams was done at interviews and documented in a database. Information about symbiosis work has been collected through interviews. Workshops for evaluating solutions have also been conducted, as well as testing a design tool.
