Important results from the project
The purpose of the project was to create a model that contributes to a more sustainable future by reducing food waste. The goal was to create a business model that decreases food waste and increases profitability for grocery stores. Through communication and education we contribute with knowledge about why food waste is a problem and potential solutions that create a positive change. The focus is to create commitment and practical change that hand in hand enables an efficient reduction of food waste.
Expected long term effects
We have, in collaboration with ICA Maxi Häggvik, reduced their food waste with 28% which saves 38 tonnes of food and 75 tonnes of carbon dioxide yearly. This reduction also saves them more than half a million SEK every year. Each grocery store that collaborates with us has the possibility of reducing their food waste by half. ReCollabs goal is to save 1000 tonnes of food by 2025. Through communication and our work methods we also increase knowledge about food waste for the grocery stores’ employees and customers.
Approach and implementation
The business model changed but the goal to reduce food waste maintained as the overarching target throughout the project. The process started in an explorative manner and different methods and strategies were tested. We were responsive to the needs and demands voiced by the board as well as employees at ICA Maxi Häggvik which evolved into extended collaboration between departments, conspicuous communcatication and a clear strategy to reach food waste targets in grocery stores.
