Important results from the project
The purpose of the preliminary study is to investigate which issues that is important to investigate in order to achieve resource-efficient handling of metal powders during the life cycle of AM manufacturing, thereby reducing its environmental impact. We have for Hastelloy X and tool steel clarified the life cycle and estimated its environmental impact. Among other things, we have highlighted the degradation mechanisms of Hastelloy X, and found relevant measurement methods. One goal was to propose a possible set of activities in a continuation project, this has been achieved.
Expected long term effects
Processing methods and procedures for recycling the powder were expected to be the focus of a longer project, as a result of this preliminary study. Now a proposal for longer projects has been produced, but several lessons can already be drawn from the project that will benefit the industrial participants.
Approach and implementation
The approach was successful when the life cycle was mapped and environmental impact in the various stages was investigated, which contributes to a better focus on continued work. Likewise, the powder degradation mechanisms have been investigated, giving rise to decreasing the effect of these and attempting to restore the powder surfaces.
