Purpose and goal

Although EAF steelmaking is considered as a more sustainable steelmaking route, still the process relies on fossil coal-based materials to significant extent. Carbonaceous materials from alternative sources can contribute to the minimization of emissions and a more sustainable steel production. The of this project is to explore the feasibility of using end-of-life (EOL) tyres, as an alternative carbon source for EAF steel production, through pyrolysis.

Expected effects and result

Deliveries at the end of project are 1) a report of pyrolysis test of EOL tyres including a detailed characterization of the pyrolysis products, solid residue, oil and gases. 2) a report of assessment of pyrolysis carbon for EAF, and 3) a report of full-scale research proposal including the proposed technology solution and the related members of consortium.

Planned approach and implementation

The project starts reviewing on the use of alternative carbon sources in EAF steelmaking, and the waste tyre management system .Then laboratory-scale pyrolysis of waste-tyres tests will be performed. The produced carbon product will be further treated to increase its density and to achieve similar reactivity as current fossil based carbon. Finally, a full project proposal including a technical solution, and stakeholders will be prepared.
