Reference number
Coordinator IUC VÄSTERBOTTEN AB
Funding from Vinnova SEK 500 000
Project duration December 2013 - April 2014
Status Completed

Important results from the project

The feasibility study would lead to how a test track / facility shall be designed and identify the needs of potential users. The test track will frequently be used by primarily train manufactures, Universities and certifying companies. The test track would be unique in Europe in two respects: the only for dynamic winter testing and the only for speeds over 250 km/h. The test track could be a base for developing knowledge that would be unique in Europe.

Expected long term effects

The feasibility study has shown that the test track could be an areans in which knowledge and products can be developed in an environment that is unique in Europe. The unique features is primarily to allow for dynamic winter testing and that it will be the only test track for high speeds 250-320 km/h. The demand is high, not only in Sweden, for this type of test track. The rail Jörn - Arvidsjaur has very good natural conditions to become this unique testbed. The investment to build a test track is relatively small to build a very complete and unique testing ground.

Approach and implementation

The analysis of the needs of potential users were made through meetings with train manufactures (Bombardier Transportation, Alstom Transport and Stadler), and Universities and their centers (Charmec at Chalmers, JVTC at Luleå and Railway group at KTH). Draft design and cost estimations was carried out by Atumo who has extensive experience in testing and infrastructure projects. The socio-economic calculations were carried out by IUC Sweden who have a recognized calculation metod.
