Important results from the project
The project satisfied the goal of understanding the market, production process and regulatory requirements, by confirming target applications, a roll-out strategy, a price point, cost of goods sold, and gross margins. The project fully satisfied the goal of verifying the positive potential health benefits of AXOS through an in-vitro study. While the project did not fully satisfy the original goal of scaling up the process and distributing product samples, key partner discussions will allow the company to scale-up the production and distribution of AXOS in the coming 2 years.
Expected long term effects
The project confirmed that Carbiotix needs to target feed and personal care applications before food and dietary supplement applications, which require more extensive regulatory approval. The project also confirmed potential gross margins in excess of 90% when using an ethanol side-stream to produce AXOS, as well as the interest from the market to produce and distribute AXOS on a global scale. Lastly, the project confirmed the potential health benefits of AXOS, with prebiotic effects that are up to 10 times stronger and longer than leading prebiotics on the market today.
Approach and implementation
With regards to the first work package focused on the market, process modeling and regulatory requirements, all activities were fulfilled. With regards to the second work package, focused better understanding the potential health benefits of AXOS, all activities were fulfilled. With regards to the third work package focused on scaling up, verifying production models and providing product samples, not all activities were fulfilled, although discussions with production and distribution partners will allow the company to accelerate the scale-up and market introduction of AXOS.
