Venture Impact Innovation Metals & Minerals - Program-specific efforts Vinnova
Call Impact Innovation: Feasibility studies within Technological Action Areas in the program Metals & Minerals

Purpose and goal

The goal of the project is to identify one or more possible CO2 capture methods that are more suitable for the aluminum industry and also to clarify possible upgrades or changes required in existing facilities for said methods to function optimally. The study will also contribute to increased knowledge about CO2 separation within the aluminum industry.

Expected effects and result

 Literature study with a focus on CO2 capture for the aluminum industry internationally.  Characterization of process gases from the aluminum industry with regard to variability, chemical content, temperature and flow.  Documentation and review of CO2 separation methods.  Analysis of the CO2 separation methods suitability  The results from this study will be able to be used as a selection basis for projects where selected technologies can be tested with process gases.

Planned approach and implementation

The study will include: WP1 Project management. WP2 Determine what the exhaust gases from the aluminum industry look like today. Using process data from StenaAluminium and KUBAL, 4 different emission scenarios will be focused on. WP3 Literature study on current CO2 separation methods. WP4 What changes must be introduced in order to implement one or more of the methods at Stena Aluminum and KUBAL.
