Important results from the project
Volvo Bus, Einride, Combitech and RISE have been involved in policy development, together with a number of different actors in the Swedish transport industry, regarding challenges faced by the applicant for road trials. This is about being able to budget for cost and lead time, but also knowing what should be included in the application. The project has seen a number of different strategies for dealing with uncertainty: established strategies in vehicle development and by the authorities, and new strategies on how to handle new safety risks without hampering the pace of innovation.
Expected long term effects
The project has conducted four major meetings where both private and public actors in the experimental activities have taken part in experiences and conclusions but also participated in and problematized and generalized these. Further results are detailed reports from Einride and Volvo of the practical implementation of obtaining permits for road trials. This helps to disseminate good examples of what a permit application can look like and how a systematic analysis of the risks associated with tests with self-driving vehicles can be presented and managed.
Approach and implementation
The project, together with project partners and stakeholderst, has been in the form of a policy lab . The work has been conducted in two different groups: a smaller working group where general issues are prepared and summarized and a larger group of stakeholders (about 25 people) who met on four occasions. At these meetings, local and national authorities and various private actors had the opportunity to contribute their experiences and perspectives. By Volvo and Einride bringing their experiences to the meetings, policy development has been stimulated by related issues.
