Important results from the project

The goal of the project has been to provide railway companies with a cloud service for planning and decision-making to improve the condition of the Swedish railway. The project has successfully built a platform visualizing lidar data from the railway. The tool is used today by customers to assess the condition of the railway and decide on maintenance measures. The project is thus deemed to be successful in contributing to facilitate and make new investments and maintenance efforts on the railway more efficient.

Expected long term effects

The project has delivered a platform that visualizes collected lidar data from the railway. Currently, the platform is used by two customers who are very positive about the tool´s capabilities and an increasing demand in the market has been verified. The tool has proven to make the work with planning and maintenance both safer and more cost-effective. Increased use of the platform should contribute to improving the condition of the railway in Sweden. The project has also resulted in suggestions for how the platform can be further developed to analyze other parts of the infrastructure.

Approach and implementation

The project lasted 1.5 years and is considered a success. The initial assumption of being able to use open source solutions turned out not to be entirely correct, which led to more development than planned being done from the ground up. This has meant that external resources (consultants and servers) are not used to the extent that was planned, but instead own personnel costs have increased. During the course of the project, the project manager and also project members have been replaced. In the short term, this has meant minor delays, but it has not affected the final result.
